News releases on Sheikh Taisir Al-Tamimi, who has requested for White to ask Benny Hinn to be part of the peace process

Ha'aretz 8/15/2003
A Border Police officer suffered very light injuries from rocks thrown by Palestinians in the Qalandia refugee camp, south of Ramallah, Israel Radio reported. He received medical treatment at the scene. Meanwhile, after Friday afternoon prayers in Hebron, police arrested Sheikh Taisir Tamimi, a senior official in the Palestinian religious courts, on suspicion of incitement. An Islamic Jihad activist escaped from a Palestinian Authority jail in the West Bank city of Jericho, a fellow Jihad activist Islamic said.

Tafir Tamimi, 51, a resident of the West Bank city of Hebron, was apprehended overnight together with four other judges as they entered a restaurant in east Jerusalem without bearing the proper permits to be in Israel. Head of Palestinian religious court arrested By ETGAR LEFKOVITS 11 Nov 2003

Tamimi has been arrested and accused of entering Israel without papers and for incitement: detained for entering Israeli territories without obtaining proper permits http://www.imemc.org/headlines/september2003/Week%202/090903/leader-arrested.htm

Sheikh Tamimi was arrested on August 15, and accused of incitement after calling for the need to defend Islamic holy sites against Israeli aggression in his Friday preach in the Abrahimi mosque in Hebron.Moslem Leader Arrested In Way to Pray In Al-Aqsa Mosque IMEMC & Agencies, September 9, 2003

“Tamimi was arrested Monday along with four other judges for incitement at the Al Aksa mosque in Jerusalem and for residing in Israel without having proper permits.

Police claim that Tamimi, 51 a resident of Hebron, arrived in Jerusalem for the second week in a row along with an entourage of Sheiks and Kadis (religious judges) but without the proper permits. Tamimi, who was personally appointed by Yasser Arafat, is also the assistant head of the Moslem Supreme Committee. He is known for his extremist sermons, in which he usually attacks Israel, calls for civil disobedience and calls upon other Arab nations to wage war. In March 2000, Tamimi was at the center of a scandal involving the Pope's visit to Jerusalem. RELIGIOUS LEADERS CALL FOR PEACE? (Alexandria) Jewish, Islamic and Christian leaders met in Egypt, pledging to end violence and to promote the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. They declared that the killing of innocents is a defamation of religion. Key organizers included Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey and Israeli Deputy F.M. Rabbi Michael Melchior. Among the participants were Israel’s chief Sephardic rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron; Sheik Taysir Tamimi, head of the P.A.’s religious court; and the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Michel Sabah. While the meeting attracted attention abroad, it was mentioned only briefly in the mass circulation Egyptian Al-Akbar, where the same page showed a photograph of a Magen David and a swastika linked by an equal sign, and a picture of P.M. Ariel Sharon and F.M. Shimon Peres over a caption saying “The butcher and the fox.” (Jer. Post, Jan. 22; Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Jan. 23)

When the Pope arrived, he was escorted by Israel's Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau and Moslem cleric Sheik Taisir Tamimi, who heads the religious courts system in the Palestinian Authority.

… Rabbi Lau spoke first and made some very gracious statements and seemed genuinely happy to see the Pope again.

Then, the Moslem cleric spoke, but instead of speaking of peace, brotherhood, and love of one's fellow man, he delivered a fiery political speech in which he leveled accusations at Israel, which he referred to as “The occupier,” calling for an end of Israel's strangulation and abuse of Jerusalem residents. Tamimi cited examples of home demolitions in the capital and made reference of the 1994 shooting attack in the Cave of the Patriarchs by Dr. Baruch Goldstein in which 29 Moslem worshipers were killed. Tamimi called for the establishment of the State of Palestine with Yassir Arafat as its president to help wipe away the injustices. He was effectively calling upon the Christian community to join the Muslims in a Holy War to oust the Jews from “occupied Palestine.”

The audience was struck by shocked silence, which was only broken by the Jewish co-emcee, who simply got up and said that the statements were not in the spirit of the evening.”

“We're here to surrender every last Jewish sacred symbol, dress up ideological cynicism as art, use it to delegitimize Jewish nationalism, undermine Jewish claims to the only Jewish homeland and unwittingly give succor to the likes of Sheikh Taisir Tamimi, the PA's second-highest Muslim cleric.                                            He's the one who walked out on an interfaith dialogue with chief rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau and the pope in Jerusalem nearly four years ago, and who lately urges Arab states to attack Israel. The Cave of the Patriarchs, he recently declared, “is a pure mosque, which Jewish presence defiles. Jews have no right to pray there, much less claim any bond or connection to Hebron - an Arab city for 5,000 years All Palestine is holy Muslim soil. Jews are foreign interlopers. According to an article there is a Sheik Tamimi that said “There is fury, fury everywhere ... Islam is escalating and cannot be resisted. I pray that Allah may tear apart America just as the Soviet Union was torn apart ...” Sheik al-Tamimi

On an Islamist website, a Sheikh Dr Ali Al-Tamimi wrote: “… Undoubtedly, the heart of every believer leaped with joy at the disaster of his greatest enemy…the name of the shuttle, Columbia, is from Columbus, who discovered the American continent in 1492 following the fall of Granada, the last of the strongholds of Islam in Andalusia. It is known that with the discovery of the two American continents, the Byzantines, that is, the Christians of Europe, exploited the resources of both these continents in order to take over the Islamic world. With the fall of the Columbia, a thought arose in my heart that this was a powerful sign that the supremacy of the West, and particularly that of the US, which began 500 years ago, is about to fall precipitously - Allah willing, as happened to the shuttle.” http://www.aijac.org.au/review/2003/283/scribb283.html

While Tamimi appears for peace he also says: “They (the Israeli army) are slaughtering children, housewives, and innocent civilians on a daily basis.” “This is not a war between two sides, this a genocide by a powerful state of another people,” he added. http://www.jafariyanews.com/oct2k2/21_News.htm
