Why should we Fear God if He loves us?

We are to reverence Him, respect Him, acknowledging how great God is and we are submitted to his rulership. In the same way child would in relation to their parent[s]. God can be gracious or if we are in rebellion and lose our view of fear he can also judge. The fear of God, is having an awesome reverence that can only come from knowing Him by experiencing His presence and seeing His work in our lives. When God's awesome holiness is understood one cannot help react in the fear of God.

We are told in several places

Job 28:28 And to man He said, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.'

Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom

Solomon wrote, Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Prov 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

“My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; if thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints” (Proverbs 2:18).

Solomon exhorted, “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death” (Proverbs 14:27).

The psalmist says of the unbelievers: “There is no fear of God before [their] eyes” (Psalm 36:1; Romans 3:18).

“Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him” (Psalm 33:8).

This fear keeps us in living in holiness Prov. 23:17-18 “Do not let your heart envy sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day; For surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off.”

Prov. 8:13 “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.”

It means to put God first in our actions and ways and not to go the way of sin.

“By the fear of the LORD one departs from evil” (Prov. 16:6). It means to obey God's way over mans.”

The benefits of fearing the Lord- “The fear of the LORD leads to life” (Prov 19:23).On the other hand “The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD shall be safe” (Proverbs 29:25)

Proverbs 10:27 “The Fear of the LORD prolongs days, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.”

Proverbs 14:27 “The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death.”

Even of Jesus it says in Isaiah 11:1-3 the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.” Will rest on him –and His delight is in the fear of the LORD”

“Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You” (Psalm 119:37-38).

To put the Word first is to fear God Himself. A low view of Scripture shows one has little fear of God. Isaiah 66:2: “But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My Word.” V.5: “Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at His word

Speaking of the church in Acts 9:31: “And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.”

Our lives are to be characterized by a reverent fear of Him, for without it, holiness, which is our sanctification process cannot be brought to its maturity. 2 Corinthians 7:1: “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

“The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him ” (Psalm 103:17). “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him ” (Psalm 25:14).
