Are we to only pronounce God’s name in the original language of Hebrew?

The New Testament was written in Greek because that is (not Hebrew) the language of the world then, like English today. It was God’s providence to get the Bible into Gentile hands, so it was written in the language spoken by most of the world where the events of Christ took place. The Jews translated the Old Testament Hebrew into Greek 250 years before Christ (the Septuagint) because they spoke Greek and in their everyday living, along with Aramaic. The Hebrew was mostly reserved for religious services.

Saul when converted heard Jesus speak to him in his native tongue, yet he wrote the New Testament in the Greek language, the tongue of all people -- so then the world can know.

The word was to be proclaimed to all people in all languages (Book of Revelation) which means it was not limited to the Hebrew only. It was the Roman Catholic Church's position that Latin was the sacred language and that the word of God was not to be translated into any other. Some do this same thing for the Hebrew language.

The use of Iesous Greek (Jesus) for Joshua (Hebrew) was common long before the birth of our Savior, it is found in the Greek Septuagint translation. The form was identical in the Old Testament Greek Septuagint (the precise transliteration is Iesous) to that of the New Testament text. The book of Yahoshua (Hebrew- English Joshua) in the Greek Septuagint is Called Iseous naus, meaning Joshua Son of Nun. So it was the Hebrews themselves that used this name in Greek before Jesus' time.

The name given for salvation to all mankind was in Greek, pronounced Iesous which is Yeshua in Hebrew transliterated in English to Jesus. It means God is salvation. It is what the word means more than the pronunciation.

Jesus came to give us a relationship not religion.  Jesus said in Matthew 6:6-7 “ pray to your Father... your Father “Over and over again Jesus calls Yahweh “FATHER” Paul writes “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father”(Romans 8:15). “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!” (Galatians 4:6). We should call God Father in prayer.

To address God by his name according to the New Testament is not a requirement.Abba is an Aramaic word for “Father.” It was the customary title used of God in prayer by Jesus when he taught the disciples to pray (Mt 11:25-26; 26:39,42; Lk. 10:21; 22:42; 23:34; Jn. 11:41; 12:27; 17:24-25). Three times in Scripture we Father mentioned as Abba, in the language of the Jews, Aramaic. (Mark 14:36) And Yeshua said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You.”

God’ name Yahweh (YHWH --Lord) is not the only name or title used for Him from the Old Testament. Scripture records at least 72 different derivative of this name; My name is Jealous [Quanna] (Ex.34:14) the name jealous expresses his character.

Mt.1:23 says His name will be called Immanuel (with us is God) a fulfillment of Isa.7:14. Luke 1:35 states, He will be called “The Son of God.”His name will be called wonderful, counselor, mighty God, Father of eternity, prince of peace.” (Isa.9:6).

God said to Moses “I AM that I AM” Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. [Hebrew- eyeh asher eyeh] (this is my name forever)  (Ex.3:14-15). The basic root meaning for the name of God is I AM THAT 1 AM. The name of God comes from a Hebrew root, Hayah, which means "to be" or "to exist."

His name as El in Job.21:14, Ps.31:5, 22:10. El is also combine with other attributes El Olam (Everlasting) is your name (Isa.63:16). El Eyon - the most high God Ex.15:26. (Deut.32:8). Jacob knew God as El Shaddai (“the Almighty” (all sufficient one) Gen. 17:1) attaching to the name God an attribute.

The books of Esther and Ecclesiastes do not use the name Yahweh, although Ecclesiastes does use the word God (Hebrew - Elohim) some forty-one times. The name used for God – Yahweh Elohim had a wide variety of uses, El and Elohim was also used for God and attached other names and attributes to Himself, they were also used in general sense of pagan gods.

So we can see that God is not as strict about a single name as some are today.

Do you speak to God in Aramaic or Hebrew? Because that’s what they did then and that is what language God spoke to them. Is your Bible in Hebrew or English or some other language? Since we do not speak to God in Hebrew he does not expect us to use only His Hebrew name.

In fact, there is no ancient New Testament letter written in Hebrew, all are in koine Greek. There were four languages used in the New Testament times Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Latin, Greek being the dominant language. We find the inscription over Christ at his crucifixion “the King of the Jews” was written in three spoken languages Greek, Hebrew, and Latin.

Many of the Jews were multi-lingual, and spoke at least two different languages, one of which was koine Greek. There are indications that Jesus and the disciples were no exception to this, they quoted in the New Testament more often from the Greek Septuagint instead of the Hebrew Masoretic text (with the possible exception of Matthew that was written precisely to the Jews).

It is declared “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).This was written in Greek. To transliterate his Greek name to English as Jesus is not error or blasphemy as some may claim.

God is NOT limited by our words and language, He knows our heart and who we call on.
